Professor Munjed Al Muderis Presents Research at Nursing World Congress

Australian orthopaedic surgeon, Professor Munjed Al Muderis, will be presenting research into osseointegration findings for burns patients at the 2023 World Congress on Nursing Education & Practice which will be held between July 17-18 in Frankfurt, Germany.

Presenting remotely from Australia, Professor Al Muderis will illustrate how the research paves the way for a broader application of osseointegration in burn amputees, offering them a more effective and comfortable alternative to traditional prosthetic devices.

This research, carried out by Dr. Amanullah Haidary, Jason S. Hoellwarth, Kevin Tetsworth, Atiya Oomatia, and Professor Munjed Al Muderis, is the first report of osseointegration surgery for burned amputees.

The research team conducted a retrospective chart review of six patients with a history of burn trauma who underwent osseointegration surgery. The patients were followed up for an average of 5.9 years, during which no issues of skin compatibility or pain associated with the TOFA implant were observed. While three patients required subsequent surgical debridement, the complications were successfully managed.

The nursing conference aims to foster and conduct collaborative interdisciplinary research in state-of-the-art methodologies and technologies within Nursing Education & Nursing. It provides invaluable opportunities to extend and strengthen the Nursing and Healthcare community, and the collective body of knowledge.

Commenting on the event, Professor Al Muderis said: “I am looking forward to presenting, albeit remotely, at this important event. Our research fills a critical gap in knowledge regarding the use of TOFA for burn amputees and opens up new possibilities for improving the lives of individuals who have undergone amputations due to burn trauma. The findings provide hope for burn amputees who have struggled with traditional socket-mounted prosthetic limbs, which often result in frequent skin problems and reduced quality of life.”
