Orthopaedic medicine is a key target sector for Saudi Arabia’s vision for better healthcare by 2030. Like many places, it is experiencing an increase in the average of age of its population, with over 65s predicted to make up around 19% of its total by 2035 – an increase of more than 500% from 2010.
The region is also recording significant increases in chronic and lifestyle-related diseases, including cancer, heart disease and hypertension, diabetes and obesity, as well as increasing rates of traumatic injury from road accidents, particularly among younger people.
With this in mind, Prof. Munjed Al Muderis and Osseointegration Group have partnered with the prestigious not-for-profit American Mission Hospital (AMH) in Manama, Bahrain to establish a regional centre of excellence for osseointegration and other limb reconstruction procedures: The Al Muderis and Associates Limb Reconstruction and Deformity Correction Institute.
With the support and expertise of a multidisciplinary staff including surgeons, physiotherapists, prosthetists and orthotists, psychologists and nurses, led by Prof. Al Muderis, the Institute will provide specialist medical services for both adult and paediatric patients with musculoskeletal disorders, traumatic and sports injury, or degenerative and acquired conditions requiring arthroscopy and joint replacement, complex limb reconstruction and salvage, and, of course, osseointegration.
“This endeavour represents an important milestone for patients living with life-changing limb conditions living in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and neighbouring regions” said Prof. Al Muderis. “Historically, amputees living here who have undergone osseointegration have had to travel thousands of kilometres for treatment, often at tremendous expense. What this institute does it bring our innovative, world-leading technology and techniques right to their door – improving access to the procedure, and also building awareness around its benefits.”
“I’m certain that with the help of our local AMH team, we’re going to be able to transform people’s lives.”
